Connect any combination of up to 12 Smart Port devices to the Robot Brain, which can then be controlled by built-in programs or programmed via a computer and compatible software program. In addition to using pre-programmed instructions, VEX IQ robots can be controlled by drivers using the Controller. The Talon SRX Motor Controller is a “smart motor controller” from Cross The Road Electronics/VEX Robotics. The Talon SRX can be controlled over the CAN bus or PWM interface. When using the CAN bus control, this device can take inputs from limit switches and potentiometers, encoders, or similar sensors in order to perform advanced control. The only problem with it, is that, it reload the latest driver when you plug the device on a never used USB port. So, if you change place of connection, you should manually set the driver to 3.3, but you have to do that only the first time you used this port. Next time, the driver remain to 3.3 and never upgrade to 3.6.

Analog Sensors
Digital Sensors

While computers, microcontrollers, and other devices that interface withVEX robots are digital systems, most of the real world operates asanalog components, where a range of possible values exist instead ofsimply an arrangement of 1s and 0s. Analog sensors like potentiometers and linetrackers are used to communicate with these analog real-world systems.These sensors return a number within a preset range of valuesin accordance with their input, as opposed to a digit sensor whichsimply returns an on or off state.

To take these analog inputs and convert them to information that theCortex can actually use, ADCs (Analog to Digital Converters) are used oneach of the Analog In ports to convert the analog input signals (varyingvoltage signals) to 12 bit integers. As a result, the range of allanalog sensors when used with the Cortex is 0 to 4095 (the range of a 12bit unsigned integer).

As with all ADI sensors, the first step to using the sensor is to set the configurationfor its ADI port.

Additionally, it is often worthwhile to calibrate analog sensors before using themin the initialize() function. Theanalog_calibrate function collectsapproximately 500 data samples over a period of half asecond and returns the average value received over the sampling period.This average value can be used to account for variations like ambient light forline trackers.

Potentiometers measure angular position and can be used to determine thedirection of rotation of its input. Potentiometers are best used inapplications such as lifts where the sensor is not at risk of beingrotated beyond its 250-degree physical constraint. Potentiometerstypically do not need to be calibrated, although it may be desired as ithelps account for possible shifting in the potentiometer mounting and tofind the actual range of the potentiometer due to its mechanical stopsas that range may be closer to 5-4090 instead of 0-4095. If thepotentiometer is not calibrated, the analog_readfunction may be used to obtain the rawinput value of the potentiometer. If the sensor was calibrated, theanalog_read_calibrated function should be used,as it will account for the sensor’scalibration and return more accurate results. The input to both of thesefunctions is the channel number of the sensor, and an integer isreturned.

Thus an example of use on a lift would look like:

VEX Line Trackers operate by measuring the amount of light reflected tothe sensor and determining the existence of lines from the difference inlight reflected by the white tape and the dark tiles. The Line Trackersreturn a value between 0 and 4095, with 0 being the lightest reading and4095 the darkest. It is recommended that Line Trackers be calibrated toaccount for changes in ambient light.

The VEX Accelerometer measures acceleration on the x, y, and z axessimultaneously. Accelerometers can be used to infer velocity anddisplacement, but due to the error induced by such integration it isrecommended that simply the acceleration data be used. By design of theVEX Accelerometer each axis is treated as its own analog sensors. Due tothis the VEX Accelerometer requires three analog input ports on theCortex.
